Introducing SSB World Player Blogs

FGO Loco - April 27, 2017

Hi SSB World Community,

Today, we're excited to launch a new feature called Player Blogs. The goal is simple, we want to empower the Smash Players with the ability to easily create Smash content to help them build their personal brand and help them share great information with the Smash 4 community.

Why Use Player Blogs?

Consider this as a better alternative to Twitlonger, Imgur or a Reddit thread. What you create here will have longevity as it will be displayed on your Player Profile and as well as connected to other pages on the site where it makes sense.

The content you create will be tied to your player profile. When someone visits your profile, they will be able to see all of the content you have created in addition to your VODs and the data that comes from it. When someone reads your content, they will easily be able to click back to your profile page.

The best content created will receive a lot of visibility. Top posts will be visible on our homepage, get sent out in our Email Newsletters and featured on Twitter and Facebook. If you create a great post focused on "Approaching with Marth" it very likely be displayed on the Marth Character page. This is a great way to continue to build your personal brand.

What Type of Content Should I Create?

Here are some ideas of the type of content you could create:

  • How to Guides
  • Matchup Tips
  • Thoughts on Current Tournament Rules
  • Tournament Previews or Recaps
  • Smash Bros News
  • Character Techs
  • Collection of Highlights
  • Interviews
  • Match analysis & player feedback or critiques
  • Anything else Smash 4 or Smash Ultimate that is actionable to our readers

You will easily be able to create content with our simple setup. You can add subheadings, bulleted or numbered lists, easily embed videos from YouTube, Twitch or other platforms as well as add images. There is a full easy to use WYSIWYG that makes creating content basically as easy as using a Google Doc.

The most important thing is to simply write about what you know. If you don't play ZSS, don't write about ZSS. If you don't coach, don't write about coaching. Have fun with it, share what you know.

What Type of Content Should You Not Submit?

  • Content that is stolen from another site. It's OK to take ideas from existing content and then expand upon them, but not OK to steal.
  • Really short content. If what you want to share can be accomplished in a couple of tweets, it might not be the best fit here. It's great to post a video, but you need to break down or expand upon the content in the video as well.
  • Entirely personal stuff, "About Me" stuff. Everything here should have a solid Smash 4 tie-in that helps readers get better or follow tournament and player news. Read your post before hitting publish, and if it doesn't help readers get better at Smash or cover Smash News with widespread appeal, consider a different topic.
  • Overly promotional content for products and brands.

Posts that do not meet these guidelines will be removed from the site. Users who encounter this type of content should use the "flag" link in the footer to notify site admins.

Creating a Blog

Simply click here to create your first post. We will soon be adding a "Create a Blog" link in the header. You will be able to create and publish a post or start creating a post and save it to finish it up later.

Once published, the post will be featured in the New Blog Content feed.

Who Can Create a Blog?

Right now, all users can create a blog post. In order to reduce spam and low quality content, future blog creation may be restricted to Players that have either 5 videos of them playing on their Player Profile or Users who have uploaded 10 VODs to the site.

Creating blog content that we would consider spam will result in your profile being blocked from future site contributions.

Future Plans

This is version 1.0 and we will quickly work to improve it. In the future, you will definitely have the ability to follow your favorite players or characters and to get notifications on their future updates.

Comments

There should definitely be some way to find blogs, through a search feature and/or by finding blogs by category (e.g. character). Right now it looks to me like blogs can get buried really easily, so I hope blogs will be made more findable in the future.
